Yes I'm taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane today and sometimes question in my mind, “What happened to my world?” We have made progress on so many fronts but regressed on even more. We have transitioned from a time when we could honestly say what we thought and while people might disagree with us they accepted that we had the right to do so and did not consider it ‘hate speech’ to have a point of view that was different. That, we said, was “America.” A land where everyone had a right to think what they think and speak their minds with some restrictions but without the PC police monitoring everything.
Today you can lose your job, your business, your place in the educational system if you utter the slightest word that is deemed by the PC police and vocal minority to be UN-PC. My father and grandfather would have had great difficulty in today’s world as would most of our founding fathers. Even now Harry Reid and the Democrats are trying to pass a bill that would virtually eliminate our 1st Amendment Rights. I almost think we are reverting to the“Alien & Sedition Acts” that was struck down where it was illegal to criticize government. That was not and is not consistent with the heart of our Founding Fathers. I believe we should support our government and leaders when they follow the Constitution and Rule of Law but when they violate the Constitution and shun the Rule of Law they deserve no support and justly open themselves to criticism and resistance.
Today it is becoming unsafe to walk the streets of most cities where prudence and diligence almost demands that we arm ourselves for ‘self-defense’. I know some will tell me that ‘If you live by the sword you die by the sword.” I agree but I also know that there are times when a ‘well armed citizen’ who is law abiding can prevent crime and possibly save a life, prevent a mugging, rape, assault, or some other act of violence. I grew up in a community were virtually no one locked their doors because the vast majority of people respected other people’s property and rights. You dare not do that today in virtually any community or you will come home to an empty house.
There was a time when it was expected of politicians they would temporarily serve in elected office and return to private life. They were ‘citizen representatives’ but today many of those in Washington have never held a real job or a job outside of being a politician. They entrench themselves in the system, reap the perks, participate in the graft and corruption, sell their souls for the almighty dollar and chip away at our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Liberty, and Freedom. When I was growing up most elected officials lived in their districts, communicated with their constituents, and actually tried to do what those electing them wanted. Today, we are nothing more than pawns to get them to the Big Show and once there we are forgotten until the next election cycle.
When I was growing up a man was expected to keep his word and dishonesty was not accepted as just ‘political speak’. Work was not a dirty word. Fidelity was not a lost belief. Patriotism would not cause you to be identified by government entities as a possible‘domestic terrorist’ and someone to be watched. Those in the military were respected. I know that began to change dramatically during Vietnam, a war in which I fought but in East Texas most still honored our troops and still do. Today, we have an administration and many in politics that seem to have great disdain for our men and women in uniform and our military per se.
What happened to my world? Progressivism, liberalism, political correctness, and moral turpitude have brought us to the precipice of the abyss of destruction. Our world has been overrun with licentiousness, lasciviousness, selfishness, and adopted a philosophy that‘the end justifies the means’ allowing our conscience to be seared with a hot iron and the mentality that we must ‘look out for number one’ to prevail. We live in a ‘What’s in it for me?' world that is eroding the very fabric of our society.
It is time for all who love decency, freedom, liberty, respect our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and believe that we truly are endowed, by our Creator, with certain unalienable rights including Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness to STAND UP, SPEAK UP, andENGAGE in the effort to reclaim our America and rescue her from the ‘fundamental transformation’ that is totally opposite the spirit and intent of our founding.
God bless you and God bless America!
