Unspoken Groanings (a Sonnet)

Just go before the Lord on bended knee
And do not worry what you ought to say.
The Spirit given you knows every plea
And lays upon your mind and tongue to pray.
What can you say to God who knows all things?
Whatever sits upon your weary heart.
Just rest your trust on that which Spirit brings;
He forms the words for you right from the start.
Be not ashamed if all you do is groan,
For God so understands this language, too.
Indeed, the Holy Spirit makes it known
In ways the spoken tongue cannot pursue.
            So lean upon the Spirit when in prayer
            And God will hear your ev'ry need and care.

"In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness,
because we do not know what to pray for as we should,
but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us
with unspoken groanings." (Romans 8:26)
