A Plea to a Sinner (for Elizabeth)

*Poet's note: Please pray for my sister in her final days

You didn't fight addiction 'cause you always let it win.
The booze and drugs were lovers dear, above your friends and kin.
Your life was pure destruction with us within the wake.
Your children paid the biggest price: their hearts and souls did break.
But now you're helpless there in bed; your body's broken, too.
You cry and beg for mercy from the ones who once loved you.
One time you pushed the world away, and now it's really gone.
You feel so all alone with shame; life's curtains now are drawn.
There is no going back to fix your selfish web of lies.
You've got so many sins accrued they reach up to the skies.
Yet, even though you're helpless and your life is nearly through
and all the things you said and did to hurt those close to you,
there is still one who loves you more than you will ever know.
He waits for you to call His name. Your heart so longs to go!
He took your sins upon Himself and hung upon the cross.
He sacrificed His life for you; He died and took the loss.
Your Father God so loved you that He gave His only Son;
if you believe Christ died for you, if you know He's the One,
admit that you're a hopeless sinner, then surrender all,
your will, your heart, your very life, your sins both great and small.
Ask Jesus to accept you now before it grows too late;
the blood He shed will cover all your sins both small and great.
Then feel the Holy Spirit burst aflame within your soul.
The shame you carried on your back the Spirit will console.
His perfect love will wash you clean; your old self will be dead.
Depend on Jesus, lean on Him, believe in what He said.
Give yourself to prayer and find the miracle of this;
You'll learn His will and follow it, your step will never miss.
And if God's Grace allows you to continue on with life,
you'll yearn with love to reconcile with those you filled with strife.
If you're sincere then Christ within will shine and show the change
but there's no guarantee your friends and kin will rearrange.
You cannot make your friends and kin forgive your sinful past,
but those who live in Christ will soon give up the pain at last.
Oh tortured child, please hear this plea and turn your eyes to Christ!
He died for you, He lives for you, eternal Love sufficed.
No matter how great is your shame, God's Grace is even more.

He sacrificed His Son for you, and all your sins He bore.
