How to Heat a Room for 15 Cents/8 Pence a Day [video]

In view of the number of people struggling to heat their homes this fall, thanks to the economic situation created by you-know-who, I wanted to share this video. It’s not magic by any means; just physics—the kind we DO understand.

My husband and I play a game every fall/winter to see how long we can go without turning on the heat exchanger. We like at least one window open at night, so the house is usually around 60 degrees F when we get up in the morning. We add the fleece and socks and slippers and Crocs and I drink lots of tea. (Timm says I drink “vats” of tea, LOL.) I have an electric mug warmer on my desk to keep the tea warm while I freeze! You have to get your priorities straight.
Sometimes I even light a candle in my office and often open the door to my processor to let the heat out. I often wear a scarf because I feel the draft on my neck. My fingers are so cold I can barely type, but it’s a game. We can turn on the heat if we choose.
Before long, that sun usually blazes in and it’s perfect inside all day. It may sound silly to play that game, but perhaps expected when you know the crazy Canucks do the ‘Polar Bear Plunge’ around mid-day on January 1st in the 40 degree pool, then run screaming and gasping to the spa to thaw the ice crystals. (Well, I do—but only once!)
Morgan has more sense. He doesn’t see the appeal of jumping in a pool that cold if there’s no stick to fetch. However—he DOES join us in the spa for a minute or two, walking all around the perimeter on the bench that keeps his head above water, his breath mingling with ours as the steam rises and the bubbles pummel our red skin.
It is my wish that everyone has a warm place to be this winter, even if they have to resort to flower pots and candles.  Soon we will want for nothing.
