Distraction On a National Scale?

Reblogged from  crowdedhermit

This week’s news is wall to wall Syria, and the serious business of sending our national military resources to defend President Obama’s campaign boast about red lines. There is no doubt that what is and has been happening to the people of Syria at the hands of their leaders (both elected and self-appointed) is beyond awful. Man’s capacity for cruelty is on display daily.

My issue with all of this is that it is nothing new. The situation in Syria has been hellish for at least the past two years. The Middle East has been on the verge of catastrophe for my entire life, and wiser men than the current president have been unable to mend what is broken there. So why is it that Mr. Obama feels NOW is the time to focus all of his attention and media support on such a distant land that has no direct bearing on our national security or interests? Why is the death of 200,000 civilians in a civil war acceptable, but the death of 1500 by a particularly gruesome method worth worldwide outrage?
Much has been said about this being an attempt by President Obama to save face over a campaign statement made without his teleprompter. Others are claiming we have the right, no, the obligation, to be the world’s morality enforcer. I think there is more to it than any of the ponderous claims being made by political elites this week.
The answer, at least in part, is October 1st. That is the date that his crowning achievement as the man elected to “transform” America begins, when the exchanges designed to remove personal choice from the health care system open. Obamacare will no longer just be tens of thousands of pages of regulations, it will take solid form.
When the US Congress returns to session next Monday, they have a chance to stop this madness. They can vote to fund the government in general, while specifically defunding this assault on our personal liberty. Instead, they will come back to town to attend the Syria Circus, and be distracted from dealing with a real national crisis.
Call , write, or e-mail your senators and representatives. Encourage them not to be fooled by this well timed distraction, to read and sign the letters being circulated by Representative Mark Meadows and Senator Mike Lee. Encourage them to vote according to the rule of law, not manipulated emotions.
