Perry: 2nd Amendment trumps Obama, any president

Gov. Rick Perry says he's disgusted by the left using the massacre in Newtown, Conn., to advance a pro-gun control agenda.

As President Barack Obama unveiled the most sweeping proposals for gun violence in the two decades Wednesday, Perry said "no gun law could have saved the children" killed in the mass-shooting.

Perry added in a statement: "The Second Amendment to the Constitution is a basic right of free people" and couldn't be flaunted by "this or any other president."

Obama urged Congress to pass universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

He also used presidential powers to enact 23 measures, including ordering federal agencies to make more data available for background checks and directing the Centers for Disease Control to research gun violence.
