Miracle Accident Saves Preemie Baby Doctors Would Have Let Die
A pair of scissors literally saved the life of Maddalena Douse, a British baby who is one of the smallest premature babies ever to survive in England.
In Great Britain, doctors consider one pound the minimum weight for a baby to be considered viable and worth heroic extra efforts to save his or her life. When doctors weighed Maddalena, she came in at exactly one pound, so physicians made the decision to try to save her.
It was not until after Maddalena had been delivered and placed on a ventilator that doctors discovered the scissors they accidentally left on the scale at the time she was weighed. The Sun newspaper reports that Maddalena in fact weighed only .84 pounds, or about 13 ounces.
The baby has now been discharged from the hospital and is expected to grow into a healthy child and not face any other issues. But she can be thankful for the miracle accident that saved her life.
