By and large, people are products of their place and time. I
grew up attending Quaker schools in liberal New Jersey, so I've always been kind
of a squish when it comes to Republican orthodoxy. One of the subjects on which
I'm unreliable is the tenet that taxes should never be raised, ever. Don't get me wrong—I'm on board
with the entire small government project and the idea that once the beast starts
eating, its appetite will eventually push it to devour every drop of revenue
before it. But when, for instance, Republicans refuse to concede even to a
hypothetical $1 of tax increase if it is coupled with a $10 decrease in
spending, that's when I find myself thinking, Gee, maybe that’s not such a
bad idea. Cont. Reading |
