Mitt Romney, routinely dismissed as a bit stiff and humorless on the stump, is suddenly cracking up his campaign trail crowds.
On Saturday, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate delighted supporters at a rally in Powell, Ohio, with a Greek-themed jibe at President Obama.
After hearing some pro-Obama hecklers in the audience, the former Massachusetts governor fired back:
"This is kinda like the Greek chorus in the background," he said, referring to the protesters.
"It reminds me of Obama's address four years ago in Denver. Remember, he was speaking in front of those Greek columns? ... Everything they do reminds us of Greece and we're not going back Greece, we're going to get America back to being America," he said as the crowd roared its approval.
Saturday's poke at the president came one day after Mr. Romney, campaigning in Michigan, made a reference to the president's birth certificate, telling a friendly crowd in Commerce that "no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."
The quip drew huge cheers, as both Mr. Romney and his wife were born in the area, and the candidate, who has previously said there is no doubt about Mr. Obama birthplace and the legitimacy of his presidency, said later the comment was not directed at the president.
But Team Obama wasn't laughing.
The campaign posted a 15-second response on YouTube Friday evening that shows a clip of the comment followed by the following voiceover: "Embracing unfounded conspiracy theories, distracting from real issues. America doesn't need a Birther-in-Chief."
