Woman Saves Seagull on the Way to Sunday Church

Written by Holly Quaglia Wells of Virginia

I was actually going to make it to church on time, but God had other plans. I took an exit I wouldn’t normally have taken, and just as I was crossing the intersection at one of Virginia Beach’s busiest crossroads, I saw a seagull flailing in the midst of it. My heart stopped, of course. I couldn’t tell if he’d been hit and killed or just injured.
It was as if God took the steering wheel and turned my vehicle around. Next, there were two turning lanes to my left that I’d need to somehow cross to park and run into the intersection. I couldn’t wait for the light so I just drove over the median. Luckily the red light kept traffic at bay. I quickly parked, grabbed my shawl off my back and just as I was getting ready to run into the intersection, praying he didn’t get hit again, from out of nowhere, a fire truck emerged…literally, out of nowhere. There are no stations near by and his siren didn’t sound until he was right at the intersection. This of course stopped all traffic dead in its tracks and allowed me to run into the middle of the intersection, swoop up the seagull and run back to my truck.
I quickly drove to our local avian rehabber. Back at the intersection, I had held a captive audience of at least 80 cars watching and I hope they sat inspired to do something the next time they see an animal or person in need.
Some people look at the suffering of the world and think it’s reason to not believe. For me, it’s all the more reason to believe and know that I was put on this earth for such a time as this. I am so happy to be a part of such an amazing community of rescuers such as yourselves.
