Former LAPD Assistant Chief Robert Vernon
A Lawsuit Filed:
by LAPD Assistant Chief of Police Robert L. Vernon: A civil suit was filed in the US District Courtroom November 1,1991. Meanwhile, the media bombardment continued. Police Commissioner Stanley Sheinbaum appeared on Geraldo Rivera’s show. That aired on December 10th. In its usual style the show sensationalized my personal beliefs. Sheinbaum cooperated with them fully saying, “Vernon will never tell us he didn’t hire Xor Y by saying she is a woman or he is gay. He will never say that so, in that sense, we don’t have a smoking gun. All we can do is keep up the pressure.” Without any due process or finding guilt on my part the members of the National Board of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) pronounced their religious bigotry.
Ironically, the very next day the LA Times reported “INQUIRY CLEARS VERNON OF RELIGIOUS FAVORITISM ON THE JOB!” The Daily News reported, “An LAPD investigation has been closed after finding no evidence that Assistant Chief Robert L. Vernon allowed his religious views to affect job operations according to court papers filed Tuesday.
” The stories about the investigation clearing me of all wrong doing ran only that one day but the future stories rehashed the rumors. Few, if any, would refer to the fact that the 6 month inquiry had found no truth to the wild accusations against me.
