After years of exposure to the Wundtian psychology, Elwood Worcester became leader of the religio-psychiatric movement. (later defined as the Religion and health Movement) which resumed to replace superstition with modern science. Though it strove to make the ancient christian message both credible and relevant a century of development shows that seeds of religious destruction were planted with these progressive ideas.
In 1904 Worcester accepted the position of clergyman of the Emanuel Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Within two years a failure at social ministry, Worcester began the emmanuel Movement, a modest experiment in the cure of souls based on the unity of body and soul. His declaration that the church had lost its control and influence over the lives of Americans was embraced by the media, with one journalist commenting, the church taken as a whole no longer leads nor even deeply moves the American people.
Counsellors led by prominent psychiatrists and psychologists undertook to change and interfere in their patient’s attitudes and way of life. In reality this represented the first public assault on religious values and principles. Elsewhere in the world churches were facing the immense human and social catastrophe of World War 1, something they felt they had done little to prevent. There was a rise in revolutionary social protest movements, such as marxism, fascism, and other totalitarian systems.
The economic and monetary depressions of 1929 also tested men’s faith. Mankind’s future was never more uncertain. Out of genuine concern for unity, peace, and justice the churches accepted the sounding criticism and decided not to interfere in order to resolve the social and political problems. Psychiatry and psychology provided a seductive vision of how they could assist.
They would uplift the religion of those who have any and give high and positive ideals to those who have not. They say they show them how to live happily and to use with scientific efficiency the forces which nature had given them, according to Dr. Charles Dana.
Had the clergy looked more closely they would have seen that the “SEED” from which these “sciences” sprang did not hold the best interest to the heart of either religion or man. The outstretched hands of psychiatry which offered help carried only the poisonous fruit of betrayal!
