 Washington’s First Inaugural Address and Thanksgiving Proclamation:

“My fervent supplication to the Almighty Being who rules over the universe. who presides in the councils of nations, and whose providential aid can supply every human defect that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States, a government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes. We ought to be persuaded that the gracious smiles from Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.

” Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation: “I recommend and assign this coming Thursday the 26th day of November to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of the Great and Glorious Being who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was...that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplication the the Great Lord and Ruler of nations and beseech Him to pardon our nation and other transgressions. to render our national government a Blessing to all people by constantly being a government of wise, just and Constitutional laws.”
