Obama betrayed Iranian protesters in 2009 – to make a deal with Iran
Iran is presently undergoing nationwide anti-government demonstrations, and leaders worldwide, including President Donald Trump, are rejoicing. It’s a stark comparison to then-President Barack Obama’s response nearly nine years ago when Iran experienced similar protests.
Former President Obama refrained from endorsing the immense 2009 protests in Iran because he was eager to establish a deal with Iran “at pretty much any cost,” according to a former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Iran responded harshly to the 2009 election protests with “the most widespread crackdown in a decade.”
So far, the Trump administration has been vocal in its support of the Iranian people.
Obama’s Lack of Support for the Green Revolution
In an interview with The Jerusalem Post, Michael Oren, a former Israeli ambassador and current deputy minister in Israel’s Knesset, claims that Obama would not openly support the Green Revolution in 2009 for political reasons.
The first reason included concerns that the Obama administration would fail to complete a nuclear deal. Oren explained that Obama wanted to reach an agreement “at pretty much any cost” – he achieved such a deal six years later.
In 1953, the CIA helped overthrow Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh and assisted in installing the Shah. Because of this, Obama wanted to show to the Iranians that he respected their sovereignty and did not want a repeat of what happened 50-plus years earlier.
Oren further told the newspaper that the Obama administration had told Israeli officials that the Green Movement protesters rejected an American endorsement because they believed it would discredit the anti-government demonstrations. “In retrospect, those explanations are less credible,” said Oren, continuing:
The Obama administration’s lack of support for the Green Revolution was part of a pattern in which it did not hold Iran accountable for any provocation. It would seem it was part of a general approach that began in Obama’s first week in office in 2009 of wanting to reach a deal with Iran at pretty much any cost.
Oren believes the Obama regime ignored a wide array of Iranian provocations. Some of these included the kidnapping of Americans, Iranian missile boats approaching U.S. destroyers, and the violent crackdown on protesters.
Obama, Trump Contrast on Iran
In the wake of the current national protests in Iran, President Trump has been vocal on Twitter, lending his support to the anti-government forces. On Tuesday, Trump tweeted:
Simply put, there is a significant contrast between Trump’s remarks today and Obama’s in 2009.
Oren said:
If the Iranian regime brutally cracks down on its own people peacefully demonstrating, imagine what that regime would do to nations it vows to obliterate. Under the nuclear deal, the regime could someday produce nuclear weapons. Nix or fix it now.
This comes after it was revealed that Obama protected the Hezbollah drug ring in order to save the nuclear deal. The administration had stymied investigations into the terror group and the vast drug-trafficking networks that generated $1 billion a year.
For years, the U.S. government has attempted to contain Tehran — and the Obama attempt failed. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) says it’s time to try a different tactic. He told Major Garrett on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday:
If I were Trump, I’d do the exact opposite of Obama. Obama said I don’t want to get involved, I don’t want to mess up the chance of getting a deal with Iran. Well the deal with Iran hasn’t worked. The money didn’t go to go benefit the people, it went to benefit Ayatollah and his henchmen. The Iranian people are not our enemy, the Ayatollah is the enemy of the world. …
You have to lay out a plan and if I were President Trump, I would lay out a plan as to how I would engage the regime. I would tell the Europeans and the Congress and the world that America is going to withdraw from this agreement unless it’s a better deal. And I’d lay out what a be– better deal would look like, and I would stand with the Iranian people the entire time.
