An open letter to millennials like me and why we're effed.
We live in hyperspace. An age where to have an understanding of the world around you, you need a sound understanding of science, technology, economy, and information. It also helps to understand multiple languages and specifically, understand how to code in relevant computer languages.
In the past, specialization grew out of the development of currency. A man was able to solely focus on doing one thing because he was able to earn currency which he could then trade for goods and services that he needed.
From an economic standpoint, I would make the case that we have evolved and that specialization is no longer single skilled. Multiple specializers exist, and they are the ones who are currently succeeding in the toughest job market in history.
Examples:
Software Engineer who is also a localization specialist.
Marketer who can also code / use design tools.
Why is this the case? Globalization.
Globalization is not a current process. It has already happened. Universal Corporate Law, Universal Markets, Universal Talent Searching
The Market has been global for the last forty years, its just taken America that long to catch up.
My senior year of college I did an exchange semester in Shanghai and it blew my mind at the level of progress and industry that was going on. And according to most people, I had already missed the slow boat of China. What really struck me was hopping in a cab from the airport and seeing nothing but apartments that were under construction for the 30 minute drive it took to get to the city center.
There are over 24 million, registered people in Shanghai. Not counting the millions of migrant workers and Non - hukou holders that are currently squatting there.
They're all learning english, AS WELL, as a second skill, and they're all coming for your jobs.
Put down your stupid F***ing instagram for two seconds, and pick up a coding book because all of these guys know how to create the technology that you use on a daily basis but have no interest in learning.
In the next thirty years, the Chinese will dominate technology jobs. They may not dominate the technology market, but all of the software engineering positions will either be indian or Chinese. And this is a fact that you need to stop pretending is not a problem.
Get off your lazy ass and start doing something!!!!
I personally am resigning my position as of October 6th, so that I can take 8 months to learn basic tools like php and mysql, and design tools, such as photoshop and illustrator so that I can actually market myself.
Because unless you know someone in your network, your employment will always be skill based.
If you're reading this and you're in a 4 year university... stop. Immediately quit that university and go learn technology because there's no point spending 60,000 a year on an education that will indent you with no chance of employment.
