The Marriage Debate Through a Child’s Eyes

Earlier this month, 11-year-old Grace Evans appeared before a panel of Minnesota lawmakers considering a redefinition of marriage in that state. She testified to the significance of her mother and father and the different contributions each makes to her life.

Then she ended with a simple question: “Which parent do I not need, my mom, or my dad?
It’s a question proponents of same-sex marriage cannot answer.
This week, attorneys will echo Grace when they appear before the Supreme Court to defend two marriage laws defining the institution as the union of one man and one woman. The Court hears arguments Tuesday on California’s Proposition 8 and Wednesday on the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

  1. As a Christian, at this point, I would like to see the secularists denounce marriage as institutionalized religion.

This would force the government not to acknowledge marriage in any official civil capacity; making religion a pure religious institution.

For tax purposes and civil contracts or some form of civil unionism would have to be officially established by civil authority.

As a Christian, I would receive my marriage in Church, but for tax purposes would engage into a civil union with my wife at the local courthouse, rather than the typical marriage license used today.

Likewise, court officials would no longer perform civil marriage, but rather a civil union.

As horrible as this stance may sound, it does protect the Church from civil intrusion, regarding marriage.

If marriage fails to remain a religious institution; the next step will be to sue pastors who fail to administer a couples civil right to marriage, under equal rights for LGBT causes. You need to look no further than Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) where the Obama administration attempted to prevent the firing of a minister on the basis of medical discrimination.

Pastors who refuse to marry gays will be next if we can't define civil unity separately from religious marriage in some way, shape, or form...
