The following article was written by Alice Smith, Executive Director of the U.S. Prayer Center in Houston, Texas.
In November of 2011, while I was praying for those who would eventually be today’s presidential candidates, I asked God what He had to say. I felt Him tell me that Governor Mitt Romney would be the next Republican nominee. My first response was that I didn't like the idea since Mr. Romney is a Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), a cult which poses as a Christian denomination. As He’s done at other times, God reminded me that my ways weren't like His ways, and that I should take care not to denounce those He chooses.
He reminded me that Mr. Romney had been the governor of Massachusetts, the state where He (God) had first made covenant with America. Not surprisingly, at that time a few of the ladies in a prayer group that I lead were upset at the idea of Mitt Romney becoming the Republican Presidential candidate. I explained to them, “You can take this or leave it, but I felt God say to me that He is the God of the original covenant, and of the original design of the United States of America, and He can do whatever He wants to reestablish a new thing in our land.”
Most of us know that the Pilgrims left England due to governmental religious harassment. And we know that they sailed to the new world, which we now know as the United States of America. However, few realize that their journey first took them to Holland where they spent 12 years prayerfully pursuing the Lord’s direction for their lives. God always reserves a people who will fulfill His covenants. The Pilgrims left Holland with a divine directive and set sail for the new world through a series of prophetic words. In 1620 they arrived at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. They dropped anchor offshore until they had first written the Mayflower Compact, which consisted of a promise between them and God stating that they were here to fulfill the word that the Lord had given them to be a light of the gospel to the native-Americans, and to walk humbly, in holiness with one another.
The Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts were a pure stream. They didn't come to America for land or to control the Indians. They came in humility and obedience to God. Sacrifice is foundational to our country. To this day there is no other nation as benevolent as the United States of America. This spirit came from the Pilgrims of 1620. Ironically however, today Massachusetts is the most secular and liberal state in our nation? So, as I complained to God about His choosing Mitt Romney, a Mormon, as the Republican presidential nominee, the Lord corrected me right there in my prayer room. “You don't see things the way I see them,” God told me. “I am a God of covenant. I never break a covenant. And I will renew them where I find a people who are willing to walk in my ways.” Virtually all of the divine visitations related to the founding of our nation occurred up and down the East Coast. The sun rises in the East, and sets in the West. God said “Just as long ago, I'm coming to the East Coast again to renew the covenant I made with the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock.”
Although Mitt Romney wasn't born in Massachusetts, he has served as governor, and in that role he exercised executive authority in that most liberal state. But the Lord said “I'm redeeming that state because that’s where I made my original covenant with the Pilgrims.” God said “the native-Americans of Massachusetts displayed mercy and friendship to the English settlers. That too was an expression of my heart and covenant.” So God told me. “Alice, quit. Put down your pettiness. Quit picking up your religious torch to hurl it into a realm you don't know. Come along side me and see things from My perspective as I redeem the land where first covenant was made with Me.”
We should see things from God’s point of view. This election is not about political parties. It’s about God renewing His covenant with America. However, He needs a people who will stand in faith and believe. God always goes back and revisits the original covenants when there are men and women who will intercede, fast and pray. We are people of covenant. God will use whoever He pleases to use in national elections. Look at how God used Pharaoh to accomplish my purposes. (Romans 9:17) See how He used the heathen, Baal-worshipping King Cyrus to save the Israelites from total annihilation, when he chose Jewish Esther as his queen. (God’s original covenant to preserve a remnant of Jews was honored when Esther learned of Harman’s intent to destroy every Jew on the earth. But King Cyrus deferred to Esther, and the people were saved and evil Haman destroyed.) God wants to change the spiritual and political atmosphere of our nation. I will be voting for Mitt Romney. My decision was made November 2011 in my prayer closet. I won't vote for him because he is a Mormon, because he “looks presidential,” or because he is affluent. I had a visitation in my prayer closet where God assured me He (God) was committed to covenant. A covenant making God hears the cries of people of covenant, and He answers them. God can use a Mormon like Mitt Romney. I'm praying for Mitt Romney to become the next President of the United States; and with the win, for God to revisit the prayers so many Christians have prayed as revival sweeps across our nation. We have every reason to say:
“Oh God, fight for us. Restore in us the original covenant that you made in 1620 with our nation, in the Atlantic waters off the coast of Massachusetts aboard the Mayflower. Let us be a people of covenant who will walk in holiness, integrity and generosity with constant repentant hearts to serve others before ourselves. From the church house to the White House; from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes; from the West Coast to the East Coast, Lord Jesus, remember your covenant. Bless us, forgive our sins and restore our land. Father God, we agree that integrity, holiness, family and covenant all matter to You. We repent for straying away from our destiny, and we thank You for coming to us once more, as you did those many years ago in Massachusetts.” AMEN. SO BE IT UNTO US, LORD JESUS.
In God We Trust. God Bless America. We are still ONE NATION UNDER GOD.
