Bite #17, Transition Intention:
Nancy Hutchinson:

An important part of the Transition curriculum is role playing games. Permit me to read excerpts from the teacher's manual for the 7th grade. These are 13 year old students! “Item: Transition features many small group activities in which students share thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Item: Observe what students are thinking and feeling. Item:

Questions provided for class discussion are usually open ended so the student’s response need not be judged as right or wrong. Example: Should students our age be allowed to read any books and see any books we want? ... Should students our age have the right to refuse to go to school? ... Item: Feel free to add or substitute questions based on students interest and your own preference: ... Item:

Transition is intended to offer openness and self acceptance with no harmful self disclosure. ... Item: Transition features 2 kinds of role playing. One game asks students to act out what they think and feel. Another game asks them to assume roles or points of view of others. Item: Transition provides an excellent format for discussing controversial issues since it stresses the acceptance of all ideas and feelings. Item:

Teacher explains what values are: After classes name values the group discusses how values develop. Then students list 5 of their own values to discuss at the end of the unit. Item: Ask students to observe how people listen in hallways and stores. at parties, and so forth. After a certain amount of time report it to the class, leaving out names.
