“I got involved in this because my child in the fall of 1982 was in the 5th grade in one of the Junior High Schools in Bellevue, Washington and I heard she was in the Health Class. It had not been made a required course the year before and in the bellevue School District you sign for your children’s elective courses.
They have a form they send home listing the choices your child has made and ,”do you approve?” You sign for the electives and the required courses are just given to them. I asked what she was going to be learning in health class by writing a note to teacher and when the information was returned sex education was listed among the list of subjects. Then I asked if I could see the sex education program. In the meantime we had gone to an “open house” and it was filled with parents.
The teacher had the text book on her table and on each desk. She said, “This is the textbook we use.” flipping through the pages I could see that book was innocent but then I asked for all material that could be used. She showed them to me and I was very concerned because they were very much at the decision making style. So I asked the teacher directly. “Do you teach morals?”
She answered, “No. We do not get into morals.” she added, “We do teach decisions but not morals.” The teacher didn’t understand my question so we talked it over with the principal who brought the Director of curriculum to talk with my husband and me. We are pro life and after talking with him we realized he was using a lot of planned parenthood literature.
In fact, this teacher was having the National Abortion Rights Action League come in for one day and a right to life speaker for one day. (5th grade remember!) I thought this was too much in favor of abortion so we decided our child would not go to this class.
