Daily Bites of Child Abuse in the Classroom by Phyllis Schlafly :

Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly:
#16 One Parent’s Letter to the Editor:
Here is the letter, the parent wrote to the editor:

“I have nothing against one to one counseling with parent’s consent, group counseling with children who show the same problems with parental consent or a child who wants to talk to a teacher for a reason. I did not know they held group classroom counseling when my daughter was in the 5th grade. Now I understand her feelings back then when I would meet her for Campfire Meetings on Mondays. She always seemed depressed, upset, and did not want to go to the Campfire meetings.

She looked like she had been crying sometimes. When I asked her what is wrong she would say, “Nothing.” Well, I found out this year that she was told not to tell anyone what was discussed in the counseling group. She kept her word no matter how much I asked last year. I do not like anyone telling my child not to tell me anything. I also do not believe a teacher or counselor has the right to badger, or allow other children to badger, make fun of, or make that child, or any child, cry in a group and lay a guilt trip on them.

I never gave permission for my daughter or son to be in a group counseling or classroom counseling. If my children need counseling I will choose the counselor and not the school. I do not like being in the dark about what my children are being taught. According to the book I read, which is being used for reference in Preventive Guidance Counseling Program, parents are untrained and unskilled to handle their own children’s problems.

Whose standards do they use? Their own? Children learn to trust their parents at an early age. Children can very easily be led to act differently as they grow up and enter school. They do not have a concept of what is being asked, such as, “Do your folks steal? What do you do around the house?”

This is an invasion of their privacy and of their parents. People complain about violence. You should read some of the books used in Preventive Guidance and Counseling program. Some of the activities that could be used would make your hair stand on end. We do not need to use violence to get a child to think! Our children are out of the classroom counseling and will stay out! God help anyone who tries to come between our children and us. signed, Larry and Betty Grahn.
