The Obama Administration’s ‘Attempt to Intimidate Fox News Will Not Succeed’

Dear colleagues,

The recent news about the FBI’s seizure of the phone and email records of Fox News employees, including James Rosen, calls into question whether the federal government is meeting its constitutional obligation to preserve and protect a free press in the United States. We reject the government’s efforts to criminalize the pursuit of investigative journalism and falsely characterize a Fox News reporter to a Federal judge as a “co-conspirator” in a crime. I know how concerned you are because so many of you have asked me: why should the government make me afraid to use a work phone or email account to gather news or even call a friend or family member? Well, they shouldn’t have done it. The administration’s attempt to intimidate Fox News and its employees will not succeed and their excuses will stand neither the test of law, the test of decency, nor the test of time. We will not allow a climate of press intimidation, unseen since the McCarthy era, to frighten any of us away from the truth.

I am proud of your tireless effort to report the news over the last 17 years. I stand with you, I support you and I thank you for your reporting with courageous optimism. Too many Americans fought and died to protect our unique American right of press freedom. We can’t and we won’t forget that. To be an American journalist is not only a great responsibility, but also a great honor. To be a Fox journalist is a high honor, not a high crime. Are Republican Apparatchiks Coming After Dr. Ben Carson?

Earlier this week, I wrote about my happening upon Fox News Channel (which I no longer watch) while channel surfing. As I wrote, “Bob Beckel Tries To Recast Racist Liberals.” During the brief interlude that I watched Beckel rave wildly about the need for Dr. Ben Carson to be ashamed of himself for daring to accuse elitist white liberals of being “the most racist” people there are, I observed another dynamic that every patriotic American should be aware of and concerned about.

It was the former Bush White House Press Secretary Dana Perino who led what I absolutely believe was a left-handed attack on Dr. Ben Carson. Perino opined that Dr. Carson was making too many appearances on news programs and talk shows. She lamented that in making what she and some of the others saw as a grave error in political judgment that it portrayed him as a political neophyte. A brief discussion ensued pursuant to similar comments and conclusions.

I have made it clear that I am not one of those jumping on the Dr. Carson-for-President bandwagon. I have been aware of Dr. Carson’s professional accomplishments since the early 1980s and I applaud his stellar record of accomplishment. But, as I have warned right here on these pages, it is important for any candidate we support to be thoroughly vetted and for said candidate to be clear on what we expect of them. And that we will hold them accountable for same.

In speaking with various campaign leaders and political activists such as myself, I have made it clear that I find Dr. Carson’s position on the Second Amendment troubling, and, while I’m not prepared to throw him under the bus for same, he would definitely need to revisit and change his opinion. I have said that given he does that I believe he could be a powerful spokesman for conservative causes.

That said, it is my opinion that the Republican hierarchy and Republican insiders view him as a much greater threat than that. I believe that they view him as a potential threat in the 2016 presidential race. A threat that could upset their plans for a successful Jeb Bush run.

Perino and the others may have been trying to present their comments as a critique, but my political instincts tell me it was in reality a full frontal assault.

There was no reason for such a left-handed attack — which I contend was comprised of Party talking points — unless they viewed him as a threat. Which brings me to my point.

The Republican hierarchy has no concern for candidates We the People champion unless said candidates are those they hand pick. Karl Rove and company savaged Christine O’Donnell. To be fair, her campaign may have aired the dumbest campaign commercial in history, but nothing dissuades me that she wouldn't have been a loyal Representative for the concerns of the people. Unlike Mike Castle the RINO she defeated in the primary.

Rove and company decried Tea Party-backed candidates like Sharon Angle and others.

As the saying goes, do the math people. Every candidate we have stood solidly behind the Republican Party hierarchy and their minions have savaged. They did it to Sarah Palin, they did it to Herman Cain, and now they are coming out early doing it to Dr. Ben Carson who has, at this point, given no indication of what his political aspirations are, if he has any at all.

As I said, the only reason they would do that is if they view him as a potential threat. As Phyllis Schlafly pointed out, Rove has created another 527 that is raising huge sums of money, and he has made it known that only the candidates that the Republican establishment vets, i.e., approves, will receive any of the funds.

We the People have the right (and must exercise same) to choose the candidate of our choice without concern about those within the establishment of our Party sabotaging them. We cannot sit passively by and watch another potential candidate and/or spokesman for conservative causes be maligned and demagogued because they threaten the good old boys network.

At a town hall meeting in Warren on Tuesday, Erica Lafferty, daughter of
the Sandy Hook Elementary School principal killed last November, asked
Ayotte about her vote. “You had mentioned that the burden to owners of
gun stores that these expanded background checks would cause. I’m just
wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the hall of
her elementary school isn’t as important as that?”

Ayotte explained her vote and explained that the background check bill
would have done nothing to prevent the Newtown shootings. That fact has
been pointed out by numerous news organizations. Lafferty was unmoved.

“It’s disappointing and disgusting that she can pretty much look me in
the eye and try to justify my mother’s murder and the murder of five
other educators and the murders of 6- and 7-year-olds,” Lafferty told
Politico afterwards. “It’s disgusting.”

No, what is disgusting is deliberately mischaracterizing someone’s
position for the purpose of portraying that person as a willing
accomplice to murder. That has been the left’s strategy since Newtown.
It is a testament to the Senate that a majority of its members,
including Ayotte, did not cave to such bullying

Now this is Me, John in helena suggesting what answer we should answer

You accuse us who believe in the 2nd amendment of wanting to kill kids,
to not care about them, perhaps you liberals should go work for the
Kermit Gosnell’s and his kind in America and hold the babies arm’s down
while they snip it’s neck and kill it, for it might try to scratch the

All the kids at the Sandy Hook school are in heaven, that might not be
true for the adults.

THE FOLLOWING IS MY SYNDICATED COLUMN THAT WAS PUBLISHED AUGUST 26, 2005. IN MANY WAYS IT IS JUST AS RELEVANT TODAY AS WHEN I FIRST PENNED IT. IT IS TRAGIC TO THINK THAT THE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR ALL OF THE TAX DOLLARS SPENT ARE NO BETTER TODAY.

There is an unjustified superiority of thought held by many pursuant to the quality of life we can anticipate for our children based on today’s educational system. I submit one finds solace in same at their own peril.

The federal government (the current administration in particular) and the school systems are committing a criminal injustice against our children and in the process tangentially – not only jeopardizing their future, but the future for us all.

Complicit in the failure to prepare America’s children for the future, and thus America herself, are the parents and business communities because they punctuate the failure with the appearance of success or at very least the idea of successful intentions.

If children are our future, along with cohesive communities based on relevant equality, the future portends a chasm between the intellectually able and the intellectually unable as broad as the distance between Earth and Mars.

No one can argue the importance of education in the preparation of children for the future. Certainly one would be hard pressed to deny our future strength is based on same. Said being the case, one must ask why our federal government, the courts and educators are willing to spare no expense to ensure the failure of today’s so-called minority children.

The most recent example of this comes courtesy of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Black students in that school district are the lowest achieving group, i.e., more dropouts and suspensions with fewer going to college.

Their solution to this problem is to generate black interest in school by introducing Ebonics in the classroom as a foreign language. One would think it unnecessary to mention the devastating effect this diabolically foolish plan will have on the children involved, but such cannot said.

Children are adept at picking up differences between themselves and others. It is those things which we have in common that frequently pave the way to success. What avenues of commonality can an undereducated child who speaks Ebonics find with another child with an aptitude for software, medicine or design?

Yet instead of teaching children that all we have and are – we have and are in common – we teach the so-called minority children to trade on differences. And not just differences of height, weight and color of eyes, but ridiculous misrepresentations of who we all factually are.

It starts in kindergarten and continues through high school. It continues in college with government sponsored discrimination based on racial preference. That the government and courts stamp their imprimatur of approval upon such a villainous practice by institutions like the University of Michigan quantifies the differences, not the commonalities.

The greater preponderance of racial division and discord, I grow increasingly more convinced, has nothing to do with color of skin as such, but everything to do with the sponsorship of racial division and discord by our government, courts, and schools.

I am prepared to argue that the curse of Jim Crow was not its existence as such, rather that which was wrought in its demise. That being a system which defines and legislates the superiority and the inferiority of people based on race.

I submit true equality – that can only come from a race neutral society – cannot be accomplished as long as government and schools are able to make gain by trading in race-based initiatives and instruction. The continued divide in education and racial preferences will have a destabilizing effect on our future because it inspires those so inculcated to grasp government-provided opportunities, which are simply slavery and indebtedness of another order.

No, folks. The Obama syndicate was never incompetent. It was and is, however, the most corrupt, criminal and openly tyrannical US government, which is now openly attacking the USA and its people, that has existed in US history. It has also, until recently, been able to keep all aspects of its tyranny under wraps...with the assistance and collaboration of the equally corrupt US media. Even today, many media outlets are still working for Obama, in order to minimize his visible complicity in the assassinations of US citizens in Benghazi, his illegal spying on and record-seizing of news agencies and their reporters (to date the AP and Fox News), his illegal and Gestapo-like usage of one of the most powerful and suppressive agencies ever to exist...the IRS...to threaten and intimidate US citizens (aka conservatives) who do not agree with his Hitlerian and Stalinist programs and policies with their own and their families' personal destruction; along with Obama's continuing active destruction of virtually every aspect of what was once the United States of America.

The ObamaGov is unabashedly a criminal syndicate that has been getting away with its criminalities via stonewalling Congress (which recently finally decided to actually fight back) during committee investigation questioning, providing the answer "I don't know" to virtually everything asked of them (on Benghazi Hillary consistently said "I don't know" and "what difference does it make" and regarding his DOJ Holder says he "knows nothing" about what's going on in his department if he is implicated in its ongoing criminalities). And now, a top IRS official (who has been rewarded by Obama for her criminal behaviors with her new position of "Head Enforcer of ObamaCare") Lois Lerner has invoked the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination during today's House Oversight Committee. Sitting there with her stone-faced "you can't touch me" demeanor, Lerner repeatedly told Chairman Darrell Issa 'I refuse to answer any questions on the subject posed by the committee today.' BTW, if you didn't already know it, this scandal (and others around the country) was perpetrated by Lerner's IRS lackeys who affected the let's-go-after-all-Conservatives-and-Constitutionalist-and-get-'em-good programs.

Guys and gals, this is what I and other have been writing about for years. I have repeatedly written that we are living under tyranny since 2009 when Obama began seizing power from both Congress and SCOTUS...with few to no "peeps" from either of those bodies. Almost every day now, some new Obama scandal seems to be developing. We certainly must wonder how long the dyed in the wool pro-Obama leftists and their media will continue to fall on swords and/or continue to support and protect this far-worse-than-Nixon illegal POTUS. Are the media also supporting the criminalization and end of the USA? Sure seems so...doesn't it?

My Thoughts On Being White In Philly - Part II - The Daily Rant: Conservative Mychal Massie's Hard Hitting Commentary on Race, Obama and Politics

Yesterday I offered my thoughts pursuant to an article that appeared in the March issue of Philadelphia Magazine by John Huber titled “Being White In Philly.”

The article generated no small amount of finger pointing, denial, and political grandstanding. But that most certainly should have been expected. Take it from me, you don’t talk about race in any way that shows blacks as being culpable without stirring up the requisite monophonic chorus of “how dare some white man share his honest feelings if it’s gonna make us (African-Americans many of whom couldn't find Oregon on a map must less Africa) look bad, even if it’s true.”

The ringleader of said chorus was none other than Mayor Nutter. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to identify him as the African-American Mayor Nutter (sarcasm intended). David Chang wrote:

Nutter sent a letter to the city’s Commission on Human Relations in response to the article. In his letter, Nutter claimed the article had a “disgusting tone” and criticized its “collection of disparaging beliefs and negative stereotypes.” He also claimed the story “used isolated negative experiences” and made “generalizations” to portray African Americans as lazy, irresponsible and criminal. Nutter requested that the city’s Commission on Human Relations conduct an “inquiry” into the state of racial issues in Philadelphia.

Rue Landau, the Executive Director on Human Relations, agreed, claiming that the article perpetuated “harmful stereotypes.” He also stated the Commission is currently looking at “relations in the city.” (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/White-in-Philly-Article-Sparks-Racial-Debate-198866881.html)

And there we have the rub. Of course, there are white thugs, gangsters, and car thieves in Philly. But Nutter and Landau are either outright lying or in a state of self-induced denial (my money is on they’re outright lying). There is absolutely no way on the face of God’s green earth to get around the validity of Robert Huber’s observations.

It is also worth noting that Huber’s observations were not those of an outsider nor were they those of a white supremacist group. They were the observations of a man who lived in the city of which he spoke. It is also worth noting that Huber made the same observations that any reasonable minded person would make. I know I’ve made the same observations.

Would Nutter and Landau have us overlook the melanin content of the criminals being arrested and adjudicated by a predominantly black police force with a black police commissioner and by black district attorneys and judges? Are we to overlook the rundown homes in much of Philadelphia’s inner city? Are we to ignore that no one in their right mind wants to be out at night unless they are with a number of people because of the fear of black thugs? Are we to ignore the behavior of black children in many of the schools? Are we to only acknowledge the rate of black unemployment and substance abuse when same can be used as a weapon against conservatives?

And when did it become an indictable offense for a person to exercise their right to free speech pursuant to factual observations and interviews with friends? Or is the real bugaboo that Huber is white and how dare a white person say something so patently factual?

What Nutter and Landau did do is send a clear and unambiguous message to invidious black malcontents that signaled permission to act out based on Huber’s article. They can deny it but I guarantee we will see increased black on white rudeness and violence because of the actions taken by Nutter and Landau.

Nutter and Landau are prima facie evidence of that which encourages and supports vulgar, aberrant behavior. They foment a demonstration of political micturition based on accusations of race that further exacerbates an already volatile alchemy of black on white crime and animus by blacks directed at whites.

Only by opening and establishing honest dialogue can the elephant in the room be discussed. It cannot be discussed through the prism of denial in the matrix of political correctness.

Political correctness dictates that white people make excuses for aberrant behavior of black thugs. As is graphically addressed in Huber’s article, if blacks in your neighborhood steal your grill and/or patio furniture it’s your fault for not taking it inside or having it chained to the house. Black children hustling drugs — they’re only doing it to get by because they need the money. The fact that the drug dealing contributes to much more heinous criminal activity and family dissolution notwithstanding. The high out-of-wedlock birth rate is because there aren’t enough abortion clinics and so on and so on.

Nutter and Landau are the face of those who fight to give passes to aberrant, anti-social behavior. Not to mention the, at times, seemingly incurable contempt many blacks have for whites.

Years ago I mentioned to a black woman that I loved the Chestnut Hill area of Philly and that we were looking for a home to buy there. Her response with the coolest of indifference was that she didn’t “want to live up there around all those white people.” A black friend who lived in Philadelphia once asked me what it was like “living around all those white people?”

Nutter and Landau are disgraceful reflections of the real race problem in Philadelphia and other cities. The real problem isn’t white people speaking out about being bullied, robbed, and feeling threatened by inner city blacks — the real problem is the denial of those who should be working to make a difference.

Getting angry because you have cancer won’t help you. You can only be helped by seeking treatment. Philadelphia has a cancer and Nutter and Landau are just two of the tumors. The cancer of black hostility toward whites has gotten into the lymph nodes of the city’s circulatory system and threatens to destroy it. Denial and fear won’t solve the problem.

Robert Huber took a huge first step. We need others, specifically whites, to step forward and say that painting a mural of Malcolm X or Obama on a wall won’t resolve the black animus and hostility. We need Americans of color to stand up and say the same thing.

My Thoughts On Being White In Philly - Part I

A friend emailed Monday morning asking if I had read the Philadelphia Magazine article titled “Being White In Philly” by Robert Huber . I told him I was unfamiliar with the article but would search it out, read it and let him know what I thought.

Huber’s closing thoughts on how to broach the subject of race are valid, and I agree with him to a point, albeit, with that said I’m not saying that I disagree, I’m only offering more to his concluding analysis.

Huber concludes, “But this is how I see it: We need to bridge the conversational divide so that there are no longer two private dialogues in Philadelphia—white people talking to other whites, and black people to blacks—but a city in which it is okay to speak openly about race. That feels like a lot to ask, a leap of faith for everyone. It also seems like the only place to go, the necessary next step.”

I say that his conclusion is an appropriate jumping-on point, but if there is to be any substantive and lasting effectual change it must include the way we interact.

My friends and I are just that — we are friends. Most of my close friends and I have been friends since before college. Most of us went on to college together. We aren't friends because of our color or ethnicity; we’re friends because we share values and interests in common.

One of my friends, whom I admire greatly, is a young man I met as a cigar smoker. I forget his exact title, but he is in charge of the physical plant of a school. I recall him saying to me one day that if it weren't for cigars we would never have become friends. To the extent that is true or not (and it probably is), our sphere of association revolved around cigars and common ground grew from there.

My point should be obvious. We become friends and our opinions and insights evolve based on common interests.

I don’t go freshwater fishing, but he does, and when I still lived in Pennsylvania I could count on fresh trout every trout season because he caught them and brought them to my house. He organized our paintball outing a few years ago which was an immensely good time.

Many of my readers write me telling me they are good friends with a black person they work with. My question is what does that mean? Does the black person think the same thing?

Friends do things together. They spend time with one another outside of work. They visit one another’s homes; their families become friends. My friend who sent me the referenced article kept a Thursday open so he could pick me up at the airport, and we could hang out together for the day. My other friend took off from work, so we could have more time to spend together.

When I’m at my one friend’s house, I genuinely feel like a member of the family. Whenever I’m in town, we are inseparable. I cried at his daughter’s wedding right along with him. My one friend and I still laugh about the time we took our children tubing on the Lehigh River together. Last summer my one friend and I would visit our mothers together. We would visit his mother who is in one nursing home and then go to visit my mother who is in another. My one alumni brother I love like a brother. He was at my baptism. We have pictures of my son taking over his lap when my son was four years old.

Several of my friends and I frequent a Puerto Rican store front restaurant in the hood. We love it. The owner always has a bottle of his homemade hot sauce tucked away that he breaks out when I show up. We enjoy eating there and chatting it up with him.

It’s not money or position that joins us as friends. That isn’t even a remote factor in our friendships. We are as diverse professionally and financially as is possible.

But all our friendships had to start somewhere, and they started with what we enjoyed in common, and they grew from there. But, most importantly race cannot be the determining factor.

Race had nothing to do with our becoming friends. Quite the opposite. It was what we shared in common. I keep going back to that because until we move beyond segregative language and distinctions we will never be able to bridge the schism race-mongers use to divide us for their financial and political benefit.

Bridging the gap that divides us begins with us. It stands to reason that if we never associate outside of work or school we will forever harbor certain misperceptions and misgivings. Contrary to the abominable bromide so often employed by race-mongers — it is not our differences that we must celebrate to become joined as a “United” people — it is those things which we share in common that will bring us together.

It is when we start seeking those things out that race-mongers will have no place. Speaking of which, you may have noticed that I have not identified my friends by color or ethnicity — that’s because we’re all Americans and our color is “Red, White, and Blue.”

We The People Must Be Aware

Since mid 2003 I’ve been sounding the warning about the hierarchy of the Party to which I belong. And I want to warn you yet again. We know that liberal Democrats are Marxists in Brooks Brothers’ suits and dresses from Nordstrom’s. And we know that the Democratic rank and file are nothing more than the neutered/spayed obedient schnooks.

But at one time we expected more from the Republican Party than what it has become today.

Ronald Reagan brought dignity and honor back to the Party of Lincoln. Ronald Reagan had a vision for America that began with We the People, but in the years following President Reagan many have used his name and memory as a means to get elected (or reelected) when in reality their goals and objectives are no less self-serving than the most idealistic and heinous Democrat.

President Reagan’s name and memory are today invoked by the Republicans whose ideals are antithetical to the very ideals he stood for. They are not unlike race-mongers invoking the name of Dr. Martin Luther King while advocating the very things that he fought to end.

I’m not going to win any popularity awards from the leadership of my Party but my goal isn’t to be popular with them – it’s to tell you the unvarnished truth.

And that truth as we speak is that it is not Obama we have to be concerned about. It is the traitorous and feckless Republicans who are led by Karl Rove, Reince Priebus, and John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, et al.

Obama has been able to do what he has because Boehner and company have not lifted a finger to realistically oppose him and his agenda. The result of their inaction has allowed Obama to ascend to mythical heights of accomplishment that are as real as unicorns.

Specific to that point, the end result has been that the public (specifically the conservative and Republican factions) has given Obama credit for spearheading the transmogrification of America into a Social State that is more owing to Republican appeasement and support than Obama’s brilliance.

Boehner’s leadership has led to fiscal agreements the likes of which a 10-year-old with a lemonade stand wouldn’t make. Thanks to Boehner’s behind-the-scenes machinations, Obama’s illegal international gun running operation has withered like a blade of grass in the desert and along with it any realistic investigation into the murder of Brian Terry and Jamie Zapata – although there have been reports of a patsy from Mexico being arrested for Brian Terry’s murder.

Obama permitted the murders of the heroic Marines and our Ambassador to Libya in Benghazi. Republicans have done nothing more than give lip service in demanding Obama be held accountable. Boehner has referenced Obama as (and I paraphrase) someone he likes and respects. I ask you how in the name of the fires of hell can an opposing Party leader profess respect and admiration for the very man who is driven to “fundamentally change” America unless he agrees with the direction Obama is taking the country, in which case Boehner should just switch parties.

Karl Rove has savaged and undermined not just Tea Party groups in general but Tea Party candidates specifically. Reince Priebus excoriated Michael Steele when the Party elements conspired to defeat Michael as Chairman of the RNC because Michael, amongst other reasons supported Tea Party candidates.

Republican Party apparatchiks like Rove were responsible for attacks on Sarah Palin, Herman Cain, and, as I wrote in my Daily Rant last week, the Party apparatchiks are now coming after Dr. Ben Carson. (Are Republican Apparatchiks Coming After Dr. Ben Carson; 4/12/13; mychal-massie.com)

As I wrote in 2003, Republicans are politicians, and politicians are interested principally in two things: our money and our votes. I said then and so I am saying now, we must withhold both from them.

Their agenda is not our agenda, and the current talk of how important it is that we expand the tent, etc. is tantamount to saying we must become more like Democrats.

We cannot trust the media. Not when certain newspaper managing editors tell national opinion-editorial writers that opinions are only opinions if same agree with their radical views. We cannot trust media that allow and encourage race mongering and that ignores the trial of the operator of a heinous abortion clinic.

We have a chance to swing the pendulum back in the direction that factually favors of We the People in 2014. We can stop Obamacare and render him of little effect the rest of his term. But we cannot do it unless we change the way we view the Party operators and take matters into our own hands.

We must keep in mind that the Republican hierarchy not only has a plan but also a candidate whom they want to have win in 2016. And I can tell you if We the People do not stop drinking the Kool-Aid and start standing on conservative principles we will see a Democrat-little in the White House in 2016. Only this one will have a pachyderm for a mascot.

In the town I called home for more than sixty years, among my earliest memories was joining my Father to attend the annual Memorial Day ceremonies. There was always a march to the appropriately named Memorial Park. It included veterans, scout troops, police and fire contingents, and the high school band.

My childhood years were marked by World War II, beginning when I was just four years of age and ending when I was eight, both fought far from our shores. My Father and I would listen to the reading of "In Flander's Fields," a poem by Lt. Col. John McCrae, MD, a member of the Canadian Army, commemorating those who fell in World War I combat.

I was too young to grasp the meaning of the poem. America had reluctantly entered World War I, trying to stay out of what was regarded as yet another European conflict. It had begun in 1914. America entered it on April 6, 1917, joining its allies, Britain, France, and Russia. The infusion of two million U.S. soldiers on the battlefields of France led Germany to sue for peace.

A holiday called Armistice Day would commemorate the end of World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of eleventh month in 1918. After World War II the name was changed to Veteran's Day.

America's losses in combat for World War I numbered 116,516. For World War II, the losses were 405,399. Memorial Day was previously known as Decoration Day, established after the Civil War to honor both the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that great conflict. By comparison, the Civil War had cost the lives of 625,000, more than the combined dead from World Wars I and II.

On July 4, 1913, veterans of the American Civil War held a reunion at Gettysburg. It was attended by President Wilson, the first Democrat to have been elected since the Civil War had ended in 1865. He would be reelected in 1916 on the campaign motto, "He kept us out of the war."

In his new book, "1913: In Search of the World Before the Great War," historian Charles Emmerson takes the reader on a tour around a world that had no idea that it was barely a year away from the most transformative war of the last century, ending the Ottoman Empire and the rule of some European royal families. The Treaty of Versailles gave free rein to the British and French to create new nations in the Middle East (mostly in the interest of controlling their oil), dividing up the region in ways that still reverberate to today. It was a war that set in motion the causes for World War II.

War has been an integral part of America's history, a nation that began with a long, eight year conflict from 1775 to 1783 in which an estimated 25,000 died. On this Memorial Day most Americans will be thinking of the casualties of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that followed in the wake of 9/11. Our troops are stationed all over the world because, after World War II, the nation's mission has been to ensure peace, but they have fought since then in Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Grenada, Panama, in the first Persian War (1990-1991), intervening in Somalia, Bosnia, an air campaign in the former Yugoslavia, and the Middle East where our troops have since been withdrawn from Iraq (2003-2011) and will be out of Afghanistan in 2014.

President Obama has been the most war-averse Commander-in-Chief in the history of the nation and is caught up in a scandal resulting from a September 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that left an American ambassador dead, along with three security personnel. No military assistance was dispatched to aid them.

No student of history, the President called for an end to "the war on terrorism," but it is a war that Islam brought to our shores, to England this week, and wherever Muslims are found in any numbers. For Islam, the jihad has no end until they conquer everyone. Not wanting to fight is nothing less than surrender.

Memorial Day is a day to remember that the history of war is also the history of civilization; wars fought for conquest and as often as not initiated by those whose thirst for power was the cause. War is often called the interval between periods of peace. The Romans used to say "Si vis pacem, para bellum." If you want peace, prepare for war.

Those of us who have worn the uniform of our armed forces have a special bond with those who preceded us.

It is astonishing how many men sacrificed their lives for an America striving to be born and one that has had to engage in a number of conflicts to maintain itself; to expand from coast to coast; to preserve the Union and. in the last century and the beginning of this one. to protect those around the world seeking relief from oppression.

We have not seen the end of war, nor will our grandchildren.

Those who gave their lives to ensure our freedom are surely worth honoring.

The Great Gatsby’s Relevance

The Great Gatsby, the popular American novel known for depicting the Roaring 20′s with striking honesty, is now a major motion picture, starring the great Leonardo DiCaprio and superhero Tobey Maguire. As I read the book, I had a chilling sensation as I realized that our culture seems to be sliding back into the sinful, sexual habits of that long-gone era. That being said, this book’s story and message are particularly appropriate for the young adults of this age, who are being told by everything, everywhere, that a promiscuous lifestyle is fun, normal, and painless.

Unlike today’s sitcoms, the characters in Gatsby are living glamorous lifestyles, but are not happy with them. The narrator’s cousin Daisy is married to a handsome polo player (though he would rather not be known as such) whose frequent extramarital affairs cause her constant grief. Her husband himself carries on these affairs despite the pain they cause, affairs which not only pull him into adultery, but his mistresses as well. The narrator, Nick Carraway, is repeatedly put in the uncomfortable position of being trusted with scandalous secrets which he did not want to know or keep.

Gatsby himself outshines the filth of the culture around him because he is carrying a love which is more pure and unfailing than the affairs of his frequent house guests, the people of New York, who flock to the over-the-top parties he opens his house up to weekly. His love lasted for five lonely years, as he watched the object of his affection marry for money (partially out of necessity), and he fashioned his whole life around trying to win her back. Unfortunately, though Gatsby’s love is much deeper and more beautiful than that of most, he also makes the mistake of fashioning his life around an earthly love, a worldly longing, as opposed to an eternal one.

Thus, when Gatsby stoops to join the society around him in his efforts to be with his love again, his foundation being built on an unattainable, fallen person, he must suffer the consequences that come with believing “the end justifies the means”. Though his hope is unfailing- and is a virtue to be admired- it was misplaced, and thus failed him. But he is not the only one who suffers, and no one walks away from the glittering Long Island scene without scars.

The movie, which has been receiving quite a bit of mixed attention, captures the suffering endured in a way which shocked me. Honestly, I had expected Hollywood to soften an ending which warns against the very lifestyle the cinemas sell to their viewers. But this adaptation of the classic novel does its job well, in my opinion. I enjoyed DiCaprio’s Gatsby, and felt he captured the magic, desperation, vulnerability, and virtue of the legendary figure effectively, while the rest of the cast performed well also, though Maguire’s Nick was dry at times.

Don't Blow the Opportunity

It appears the Republican Party establishment and some conservative commentators have come up with another mistaken tactic to woo the low information and undecided voters. With the avalanche of scandals swirling around the Obama administration and the Democratic Party, the political message promoted by these politicians and pundits is that these scandals are the outcome of a government that has grown too large to control and should therefore be dramatically cut back.

The Republican Party landscape is littered with the carcasses of failed strategies and this approach will also not succeed. First, it is nearly impossible to explain in simple and easily understood terms why the government is too large and how that aided in creating the scandals and economic difficulties the nation faces. Particularly when the largely uninformed target audience is either dependent on government or has been led to believe government is the ultimate arbiter of prosperity. Second, while there is no question that government must get smaller, the exponential growth of government is not the cause of the scandals. Rather it too is an end-product of a process whose origin is basic and easily grasped.

The American founding fathers understood that government expands and becomes tyrannical not because it is inherently corrupt, but government, because of its unique role in the affairs of a nation, can easily be transformed into an overwhelming instrument of oppression and self-aggrandizement. That transformation occurs over an extended period of time primarily as a consequence of political and national leaders who are devoid of character, honor and integrity seeking to amass power and ego gratification, regardless of the long-term implications to the well being and future of the country.

This process, while slowly evolving over the past eighty years, has hit the crisis point with the most corrupt and ideological administration in American history, coupled with the massive infiltration of government agencies and if the mainstream media by those motivated by ideology, greed and narcissism. Thus the scandals presently monopolizing the headlines are not the direct result of out of control government but the near total lack of ethics, honesty and integrity among those in government and increasingly throughout society in general.
Barack Obama is the culmination of this process. A glaring indicator of his lack of character is that he is inordinately adept, with the help of a sympathetic media, at dodging any responsibility while claiming no knowledge of the goings on in his administration; preferring instead to have other bear the brunt of blame and any consequences. Further, having been raised in a 1960's radical milieu, he is a firm believer in the bedrock tenet of socialism/Marxism: the end justifies the means in defeating one's political enemies. Anyone who is steeped in that viewpoint must, by necessity, be devoid of honor and integrity.

Barack Obama has not hidden his animosity to Republicans in Congress, the Tea Party Movement, the alternative media, evangelical Christians, conservatives, the Catholic Church or any other entity that espouses any philosophical belief counter to left-wing extremism. He considers these groups to be implacable adversaries that must be destroyed. Since Obama's first inauguration he and his administration have utilized the propaganda and regulatory machinery of the government, with the aid of far too many sycophants in the mainstream media, to marginalize and overwhelm these groups.

Therefore, lying about what happened at Benghazi and allowing four Americans to be sacrificed on the altar of expediency in order to win an election is justified. In the mindset of those currently in power, this is not a lie or obfuscation and above all these actions are certainly not an immoral act, as the greater good has been served. Thus Barack Obama and his fellow-travelers will adamantly refuse to ever admit any wrong doing and those that insist that they do so must be vilified.

Never has any presidential administration in American history, including Richard Nixon, attacked so vociferously the foundational tenets of free speech and freedom of the press. Under the guise of seeking out those leaking so-called national security secrets the Obama Justice Department attacked and is threatening to prosecute the reporters and media outlets publishing the stories. This has never been done before as the media has a constitutional right to report and seek out the news. If classified information is revealed, then the culpability lies with those who leaked the information, not the media. These actions by the Obama administration, reminiscent of the many despots in the past century, are geared to silence and intimidate the press from exposing the errors and mistakes of the White House and the servile executive branch it oversees.

In another time those in the management of the IRS would have instinctively known that it would be unethical and morally wrong, never mind illegal, to target and leak confidential information about the political adversaries of the person occupying the White House. Particularly as that agency wields vast power over the American people and as such those that work there have been granted a unique responsibility and place in society. Today, however, pleasing the political hierarchy, whose directives they were following, in order to garner promotions or acceptance by their ideological peers is more important.

This nation is mired in a crisis. It is a lack of honor and integrity in the nation's ruling class and a plurality of the citizens that has brought about the economic and societal deterioration the nation is experiencing. The United States will continue this precipitous decline until this failing is reversed.

The Republican Party Establishment and the conservative movement must focus on and promote this easily understood because of not only the ongoing scandals of Obama and the Democratic Party but of the nation's woes in general. As many national polls clearly indicate, a large majority of the American people still view character as a vital and necessary attribute in the nation's political leaders as well as the society as a whole. The time has come to make this a major issue and abandon the failed strategy of trying to buy off various demographic groups or offering a milder and cheaper version of liberalism or causing the eyes of the voters to glaze over with esoteric discussions about big versus small government or being intimidated by the now threadbare charges of racism or intolerance.

Euthanasia, Abortion and the Pros and Cons of Assisted Suicide

Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide

The news is that Vermont has passed an assisted suicide bill allowing patients to
choose death over what they deem to be an unbearable life with pain both physically and/or mentally. As many comments state “Hey, a person has a right to choose”. So what exactly are they choosing? They assume that all pain disappears with death and they know this how? No one has come back to tell us what exists on the other side for all we know we take our pain with us.

You know it all sounds reasonable, good, understandable to be able to choose when to die or when to have a baby or whatever. In the case of abortion you are not just dealing with yourself even though you tell yourself you are but you are dealing with a life form. Science has clarified that life begins at conception because DNA is present at the time of conception and DNA means life. In the case of assisted suicide then you only have yourself to answer to and oh doesn't it seem plausible that a person has a right to choose when he or she dies particularly if they are suffering from some debilitating disease. Unfortunately it doesn’t stop there. Somehow that little slippery slope always pops up somewhere.

Let’s take a look at the history of Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide.

Now we all know from history books that Socrates was forced to drink poison because those in power objected to his way of thinking. He drank hemlock, killing himself. I guess you could say it was his choice because his alternative wasn’t real pretty. If he hadn't drunk from the cup of death then the powers that be at the time would have killed him in what might have been a more horrendous manner.

1920 – a book by the title “Permitting the Destruction of Life not Worthy of Life” was written by the authors Alfred Hoche, MD, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Freiburg and Karl Binding, a professor of law from the University of Leipzig, argued that patients who ask for “death assistance” should under very carefully controlled conditions be able to obtain it from a physician, This book helped support involuntary euthanasia by Nazi Germany.

1935- The Euthanasia Society of England was formed to promote euthanasia

1939- Nazi, Germany. In October 1939 Hitler orders widespread “mercy killing” of the sick and disabled. Code named “Akton T4″ the Nazi euthanasia program to eliminate ”life unworthy of life” at first this was focused on newborns and very young children. It was quickly expanded to include adults.

In the early 1930's a number of prominent German academics and medical professionals were espousing the theory of “unworthy life”, a theory which advanced the notion that some lives were simply not worthy of living.

Dr. Ernst Rudin, who believed not only that these were lives not worth living, but that doctors had a responsibility to destroy such life and remove it from the general populations. The unapologetic Dr. Rudin began sterilization and extermination of the following flaws lest they reproduce and further contaminate the German gene pool; feeble-mindedness, Schizophrenia, manic depression or as it’s called today by-polar, epilepsy, hereditary blindness, deafness, physical deformities, Huntington’s disease and alcoholism.

Another IRS Scandal: Two ‘Sentenced for Unemployment Insurance Fraud’

Congressional hearings over the last two weeks have been filled with stories of misconduct due to incompetence and inexperience among certain IRS employees. Both Republicans and Democrats have leveled the accusations, and Internal Revenue officials testifying before Congress have admitted as much. At the same time, all parties have stressed that the vast majority of IRS employees are hard working, competent, and honest civil servants.

This story isn't about them either.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development just announced the sentencing of two former IRS employees “for unemployment insurance fraud.” Seven other former IRS employees have already been convicted and sentenced as a result of the investigation:

INDIANAPOLIS – Over the past week two former United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees have been sentenced for unemployment insurance fraud. Carmen Brown, also known as Carmen Smith, 41, of Indianapolis, and Terri Wardell, 48, of Fishers, both pled guilty to unemployment insurance fraud. The two filed for and received unemployment insurance benefits while working full-time for the IRS. Smith illegally received nearly $14,000 in benefits. Wardell fraudulently collected over $18,000...
“It does not matter who you are or who you work for, we work diligently to make sure those who take funds they are not eligible for, are held accountable”, said Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “These funds are for Hoosiers truly in need and we take our job safeguarding these funds very seriously.”

The other evening on my twitter, a person asked me why I didn't like the Obama's? Specifically I was asked: "I have to ask, why do you hate the Obama's? It seems personal, not policy related. You even dissed (disrespect) their Christmas family picture."

The truth is I do not like the Obamas, what they represent, their ideology, and I certainly do not like his policies and legislation. I've made no secret of my contempt for the Obamas. As I responded to the person who asked me the aforementioned question, I don't like them because they are committed to the fundamental change of my/our country into what can only be regarded as a Communist state.

I don't hate them per definition, but I condemn them because they are the worst kind of racialists, they are elitist Leninists with contempt for traditional America . They display disrespect for the sanctity of the office he holds, and for those who are willing to admit same, Michelle Obama's raw contempt for white America is transpicuous.

I don't like them because they comport themselves as emperor and empress. I expect, no I demand respect, for the Office of President and a love of our country and her citizenry from the leader entrusted with the governance of same. President and Mrs. Reagan displayed an unparalleled love for the country and her people. The Reagan's made Americans feel good about themselves and about what we could accomplish. His arrogance by appointing 32 leftist czars and constantly bypassing congress is impeachable. Eric Holder is probably the MOST incompetent and arrogant DOJ head to ever hold the job. Could you envision President Reagan instructing his Justice Department to act like jack-booted thugs?

Presidents are politicians and all politicians are known and pretty much expected to manipulate the truth, if not outright lie, but even using that low standard, the Obama's have taken lies, dishonesty, deceit, mendacity, subterfuge and obfuscation to new depths. They are verbally abusive to the citizenry, and they display an animus for civility.

I do not like them, because they both display bigotry overtly, as in the case of Harvard Professor Louis Gates, when he accused the Cambridge Police of acting stupidly, and her code speak pursuant to now being able to be proud of America. I view that statement and that mindset as an insult to those who died to provide a country where a Kenyan, his illegal alien relatives, and his alleged progeny, could come and not only live freely, but rise to the highest, most powerful, position in the world. Michelle Obama is free to hate and disparage whites because Americans of every description paid with their blood to ensure her right to do same.

I have a saying, that "the only reason a person hides things, is because they have something to hide." No president in history has spent over a million dollars to keep his records and his past sealed.

And what the two of them have shared has been proved to be lies. He lied about when and how they met, he lied about his mother's death and problems with insurance, Michelle lied to a crowd pursuant to nearly $500,000 bank stocks they inherited from his family. He has lied about his father's military service, about the civil rights movement, ad nausea. He lied to the world about the Supreme Court in a State of the Union address. He berated and publicly insulted a sitting Congressman. He has surrounded himself with the most rabidly, radical, socialist academicians today. He opposed rulings that protected women and children that even Planned Parenthood did not seek to support. He is openly hostile to business and aggressively hostile to Israel . His wife treats being the First Lady as her personal American Express Black Card (arguably the most prestigious credit card in the world). I condemn them because, as people are suffering, losing their homes, their jobs, their retirements, he and his family are arrogantly showing off their life of entitlement - as he goes about creating and fomenting class warfare.

I don't like them, and I neither apologize nor retreat from my public condemnation of them and of his policies. We should condemn them for the disrespect they show our people, for his willful and unconstitutional actions pursuant to obeying the Constitutional parameters he is bound by, and his willful disregard for Congressional authority.

Dislike for them has nothing to do with the color of their skin; it has everything to do with their behavior, attitudes, and policies. And I have open scorn for their constantly playing the race card.

I could go on, but let me conclude with this. I condemn in the strongest possible terms the media for refusing to investigate them, as they did President Bush and President Clinton, and for refusing to label them for what they truly are. There is no scenario known to man, whereby a white president and his wife could ignore laws, flaunt their position, and lord over the people, as these two are permitted out of fear for their color.

As I wrote in a syndicated column titled, "Nero In The White House" - "Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. He is the most mendacious political figure I have ever witnessed. Even by the low standards of his presidential predecessors, his narcissistic, contumacious arrogance is unequalled. Using Obama as the bar, Nero would have to be elevated to sainthood... Many in America wanted to be proud when the first person of color was elected president, but instead, they have been witness to a congenital liar, a woman who has been ashamed of America her entire life, failed policies, intimidation, and a commonality hitherto not witnessed in political leaders. He and his wife view their life at our expense as an entitlement - while America 's people go homeless, hungry and unemployed.”

Issa: Lois Lerner lost her 5th Amendment Rights

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again.

The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service.

“When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Dear Mr.Obama:

Were those Muslims that were in America when the Pilgrims first landed? Funny, I thought they were Native American Indians.

Were those Muslims that celebrated the first Thanksgiving day? Sorry again, those were Pilgrims and Native American Indians.

Can you show me one Muslim signature on the United States Constitution?

Declaration of Independence?

Bill of Rights?

Didn't think so.

Did Muslims fight for this country's freedom from England ? No.

Did Muslims fight during the Civil War to free the slaves in America ? No, they did not. In fact, Muslims to this day are still the largest traffickers in human slavery. Your own half-brother, a devout Muslim, still advocates slavery himself, and Muslims often refer to black Muslims as "pug nosed slaves." Says a lot of what the Muslim world really thinks of your family's "rich Islamic heritage," doesn't it Mr. Obama?

Where were Muslims during the Civil Rights era of this country? Not present.

There are no pictures or media accounts of Muslims walking side by side with Martin Luther King, Jr. or helping to advance the cause of Civil Rights.

Where were Muslims during this country's Woman's Suffrage era? Again, not present.

In fact, devout Muslims demand that women are subservient to men in the Islamic culture. So much so, that often they are beaten for not wearing the 'hajib' or for talking to a man who is not a direct family member or their husband. Yep, the Muslims are all for women's rights, aren't they?

Where were Muslims during World War II? They were aligned with Adolf Hitler. The Muslim grand mufti himself met with Adolf Hitler, reviewed the troops and accepted support from the Nazi's in killing Jews.

Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren't flying planes into the World Trade Center , the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East .

No one can dispute the pictures shown from all parts of the Muslim world celebrating on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely, the very "moderate" Muslims who's asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo , Egypt were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence has meant approval for the acts of that day.

And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the "rich heritage" Muslims have here in America ..

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslims.

And now we can add November 5, 2009 - the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major who is a doctor and a psychiatrist who was supposed to be counseling soldiers returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan ..

And what about the Boston Marathon?

That, Mr. Obama is the "Muslim heritage" in America!

Mayor of tornado-ravaged town: wants ordinance passed required storm shelters in new homes

May 22, 2013 – OKLAHOMA – The mayor of tornado-ravaged Moore, Oklahoma, will push for a law requiring storm shelters or safe rooms in new homes, he told CNN Wednesday. “We'll try to get it passed as soon as I can,” Glenn Lewis said. The ordinance would apply to single-family and multi-family homes. At least 24 people, including nine children, were killed in Monday's mammoth tornado, the state medical examiner's office said Teachers saved lives during the tornado but some loved ones are still missing after the twister ripped through 17 miles of central Oklahoma and pummeled 2,400 homes. Cassandra Jenkins has no idea what happened to her grandparents, more than a day after the twister struck their hometown of Moore. “All we know is that their home is still left standing. However, they have not been seen or heard from since the storm hit,” she said as her daughters clutched photos of their great-grandparents. Terrified children, teachers' heroics saved many but there was no adequate shelter inside a tornado-ravaged school. “We've tried to locate them at every hospital, every shelter, every Red Cross facility. Anything we could possibly reach out to, we have.” Damage assessments Tuesday showed the tornado had winds over 200 mph at times, making it an EF5 -- the strongest category of tornadoes measured, the National Weather Service said. Lewis said the devastation was so catastrophic that city officials rushed to print new street signs to help guide rescuers and residents through the newly mangled and unfamiliar landscape. The financial impact will be monumental. Insurance claims will probably top $1 billion, said Kelly Collins of the Oklahoma Insurance Commission. Craig Fugate, the Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator, told CNN the agency is in “good shape” to support the recovery in Oklahoma and in other disaster zones, such as rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and New York. “We got full allocation last year with the Sandy supplemental funds. We are looking to continue the response here as well as the previous disasters.” But “if we have another hurricane, we may need more money,” he said Wednesday. -CNN

Stockholm erupts in wave of violence for third night

May 22, 2013 – SWEDEN - Rioters have lit fires and stoned emergency services in the suburbs of Stockholm for the third night in a row after a man was shot dead by police. Incidents were reported in at least nine suburbs of the Swedish capital and police made eight arrests. On Sunday night, more than 100 cars were set alight, Swedish media report. Police in the deprived, largely immigrant suburb of Husby shot a man dead last week after he reportedly threatened to kill them with a machete. The founder of a local youth group told Swedish media the riots were a reaction to “police brutality.” Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told reporters on Tuesday that Sweden would not be intimidated by rioters. On Tuesday night, cars were torched in western and southern Stockholm, and stones were thrown at police officers and firefighters. One area affected, Rinkeby, saw similar rioting in 2010. Kjell Lindgren of the Stockholm police told Aftonbladet newspaper that the unrest had spread from the original rioting in Husby. “It feels like people are taking the opportunity in other areas because of the attention given to Husby,” he said. Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Reinfeldt said: “We've had two nights with great unrest, damage, and an intimidating atmosphere in Husby and there is a risk it will continue. We have groups of young men who think that that they can and should change society with violence. Let's be clear: this is not okay. We cannot be ruled by violence.” More than 80% of Husby's 12,000 or so inhabitants are from an immigrant background, and most are from Turkey, the Middle East and Somalia. –BBC

Obama’s ‘Iron Curtain’ descends on America

Under Obama, the net is getting tighter. The IRS spied on average citizens who make up the nation’s Tea Party groups, among others identified as ‘Enemies of the State’

Under the Marxist rule of President Barack Hussein Obama, Uncle Sam morphs day by day into ‘Uncle Satan’. Ironic when contemplating that Iran has long called America “the great Satan”.

Far more wily than Uncle Sam or Uncle Sugar, ‘Uncle Satan’ lures scores of U.S. citizens motivated by entitlement mentality with food stamps, free cell phones and unquestioned access to social security, into a trap from which they will never escape.

Comfortable with the guarantee the government will look after them from cradle to grave, few see the walls going up around them.

Canada Free Press (CFP) reader Alan Beckler sends interesting but chilling thoughts about the walls going up around American citizens today.

“While doing some Cold War research today, I ran across a most interesting article on the Berlin Wall history. Attached is an excerpt. What is so chilling is that one could change the German names to present administration names and with our current IRS and DOJ ‘scandals’, it is really chilling.

Dire warnings from this excerpt from ‘The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall’ will be lost on low information voters dependent on government handouts but will send chills down the spines of the millions who see that the IRS and Justice Department scandals mark the beginning of the ultimate capture of the U.S. citizenry.

Nothing in the Common Core curriculum teaches children about the fate of ordinary people trapped behind the Berlin Wall. Their teachers likely think of the Wall in terms of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies.

It was only 24 years ago; roughly one generation ago, that the Berlin Wall came down. Celebrations televised worldwide were joyous, people scaled the wall, with souvenir hunters taking chunks of it home for the mantle piece. Like the tragedies of many wars, too soon forgotten were the 5,000 people who attempted to escape over an Iron Curtain, that stood for 28 long years, including their estimated death toll of well over 600.

Just like some governments we know determined to never let any crisis go to waste, the Socialists watched for the right moment to entrap their own citizens in 1961 Germany.

“Building workers in East Berlin’s Stalinallee confronted by a 10% production quota increase saw no reason to strain themselves for a meagre paypacket, and on June 16, 1953 they stopped work. Next day their action was repeated in over 350 towns and cities across the DDR.

“Strikes became demonstrations, not just for new economic policies, but for free, Germany-wide elections and an end to the all-pervading Socialist Party rule. The East German government was at a loss. Soviet tanks rolled in, the uprising was put down and several hundred lost their lives. In that year, another 332,000 would leave for the West. Committed communist poet Bertolt Brecht suggested it might be easier for the government to dismiss the population and vote in a new one.

“That was it. The gloves were off. Ulbricht tightened his control, branded any and all vocal opposition as the criminal actions of those favouring a return to fascism, militarism and atomic war. Citizens’ private lives were opened to public scrutiny and direction. Religion was ‘out’, weddings were to be conducted in Registry Offices only, and young people taking Confirmation could lose their right to education. Under the direction of First Secretary Erich Honecker, all western-facing television aerials were to be destroyed. The single Trade Union was to focus on the new slogan: “World Competition” – in other words, more work!

“Art too was to be State-directed. Walter Ulbricht wanted no more abstracts of “rotten fish and lunar landscapes”, rather heroic portraits of working men, with muscular arms, powerful chests and proud smiles on their faces. Historic buildings were left to fall while new faceless identical blocks were put up in endless rows. Germany’s legacy of historic palaces became kindergartens or old people’s homes.

“... It was decided to soften the population and win hearts. In 1958 rationing of fats, meat and sugar was ended – though with no guarantees of sufficient supplies! Economically there was to be a great leap forward; industrial production was to be expanded, with the illusory aim of overtaking the West by 1961. At the same time however, many previously independent firms were nationalized, and peasants were forced into unpopular Agricultural Cooperatives. So unpopular were they in fact, that peasants unwilling to cooperate were imprisoned. But discontent remained. In 1959 another 143,000 left, and one year later, 199,000.

“During the 1960s both in East Germany and in the Soviet Union, economicpolicy fluctuated uncertainly between central control and a limited free market economy. Ulbricht brought new people into his administration with new ideas on market competition and productivity. For a time East Germany became world competitive but only in a very few sectors – and the living standards of East German citizens, having risen slightly and briefly, remained stagnant then began to fall as consumer shortages again became apparent. State deficits grew rapidly, world competitiveness became a far-off dream, and discontent continued to mount.

“Economic and budgetary distortions remained, making it difficult either to direct resources or to control a budget. Social subsidies remained on a variety of goods and services including public transport, rents, food and the arts. And the economy was weighed down by an enormous bureaucracy, as well as the Stasi (Staats Sicherheit = State Security), a massive spying operation itself employing thousands, “assisted” by equal numbers of Inoffiziellen Mitarbeitern or unofficial collaborators, unfortunate citizens who had been blackmailed using some minor indiscretion into informing on neighbours and their movements.

“Everyone came to suspect everyone else; after the Fall of the Wall, West Germans (Wessies) would come over to the East and exclaim how dirty everything was and why couldn’t people paint their houses. One simple reason: no paint. But if you did manage to lay your hands on a pot of paint or a length of timber, your neighbours would cross the street to avoid you, assuming that you had to be spying or a Party member.

“Only after Unification, did the full extent of Stasi activities become known, as some 180 kilometers of files and 35 million other documents came to public view. In addition there were numerous photos, sound documents, and tapes of telephone conversations. The psychological impact on the population was almost worse than their physical shortages.”

“Does this have a familiar ring to it as a possibility?”, Beckler asks in this morning’s email to CFP.

By the time socialist governments throw the net over their citizens, it is almost always already too late to escape.

Under Obama, the net is getting tighter. The IRS spied on average citizens who make up the nation’s Tea Party groups, among others identified as ‘Enemies of the State’. The same IRS hired by Obama to administer ObamaCare.

Yesterday when Tea Party groups protested in cross-country demonstrations, armed Dept. of Homeland Security agents were out in full force.

Mystery respiratory illness infects 7, kills 2 in Alabama

May 22, 2013 – ALABAMA - A mystery respiratory illness has killed two people and infected five others in Alabama. All of the victims have shown signs of fever, cough and shortness of breath, but the Alabama Department of Public Health hasn't been able to identify the disease. Officials collected samples from all of the victims and sent them to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, but results aren't available yet. One of the test samples tested positive for H1N1 influenza A, but officials aren't sure if that's what caused the illness. “At this point it's too early to tell,” [Acting state epidemiologist for the Alabama Department of Public Health Dr. Mary] McIntyre told NBC News. “That's why we called it a respiratory illness of unknown origin.” McIntyre did note that none of the victims had travelled – or been in contact with someone who'd travelled – outside the country recently, which would have put them at risk for several unfamiliar diseases. In recent months, a new strain of Coronavirus surfaced in several countries, including France, the UK and Saudi Arabia, killing 18 and infecting another 15. And there's been recent evidence that H7N9, a strain of the bird flu has killed 17 and infected 82 in China, might spread person-to-person, though Alabama officials said there was no evidence linking the infections to H7N9. The Centers for Disease Control referred all questions to Alabama health officials. –ABC News

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS

The Federalist Papers are a series of 85 articles or essays advocating the ratification of the United States Constitution. Seventy-seven of the essays were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788. A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist; or, The New Constitution, was published in two volumes in 1788 by J. and A. McLean. The series’ correct title is The Federalist; the title The Federalist Papers did not emerge until the twentieth century.

The Federalist remains a primary source for interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, as the essays outline a lucid and compelling version of the philosophy and motivation of the proposed system of government. The authors of The Federalist wanted both to influence the vote in favor of ratification and to shape future interpretations of the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson called the Federalist Papers the best commentary ever written about the principles of government.
